Church Stretton and the Long Mynd

Less than 40 minutes drive from St Milburga Chapel holiday cottage is the town of Church Stretton, Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd. Church Stretton is a small, friendly town with a huge antiques emporium, a large playground, sports fields (includes crown bowls and tennis), plenty of tea rooms and a small supermarket. Carding Mill valley is the start of lots of walks up onto the Long Mynd, which is exactly as it sounds, a long mound of earth with some pretty amazing views of the Shropshire Hills. From the top of the Long Mynd you can see as far as Snowdonia, the Brecon Beacons, the Malverns, the Wrekin and the Cheshire hills. There are a lot of short, medium and long walks to choose from at Carding Mill and we have included a picture of the National Trust guides below. If you stay in our holiday cottage, you will also find a book of Shropshire Hill walks that includes a 5 hour walk up and along the Long Mynd, before returning via Little Stretton. The National Trust have a tea room halfway up Carding Mill valley, with a roasting wood fire in the middle of the room.

The National Trust also encourage mountain biking across the Long Mynd and there are some lovely trails to have a go at – the map of the mountain biking trails is below.
