Long Weekend Breaks in Shropshire: Ideas for a Relaxed Stay Near Ludlow

With the children back at school after the holidays, now is the perfect time to think about booking a long weekend break in Shropshire – especially if you are looking to unwind and relax after the busy Easter period. April is a beautiful month for a spring getaway. The days are longer and the evenings lighter. When the April showers ease and the sun makes an appearance, it can feel surprisingly warm – warm enough to sit outside and soak up some much-needed sunshine after the winter months. What I particularly love is that everywhere feels like it is coming alive. Spring flowers are still putting on a show and the bare trees are gradually turning green again. Anyone able to plan a short break at this time of year can take advantage of quieter surroundings, less crowded attractions and greater choice when it comes to finding the right place to stay. With this in mind, here is our suggestion for a perfect long, relaxing weekend break at St Milburga Chapel.

Friday – a time to arrive and unwind

Before you arrive, why not call into the Ludlow Farm Shop, which is around 10 minutes from St Milburga Chapel? Make time to enjoy a drink in the café before exploring the farm shop. It’s the perfect opportunity to treat yourself to some local produce for dinner, or to make things easy by picking up one of their ready-prepared meals. Don’t forget to browse their wide selection of local wine, beer and non-alcoholic drinks — along with plenty of tempting sweet treats. You can check in to St Milburga Chapel from 3 pm onwards, giving you plenty of time to unpack and settle in before the evening. If the weather and your energy levels allow, we suggest a short walk to explore the local area. You could head down the road to St Milburga’s Well, continuing on to the historic church and graveyard. Or, if you’re feeling more energetic, walk towards Nordy Bank Hill Fort for wonderful views across to the Clee Hills. But remember — it’s your break, and there’s no pressure to do anything at all. Afterwards, cook a simple supper, pour a glass of something local and unwind in front of the fire. There are books, DVDs, board games and Netflix to help you settle into the evening.

Saturday – a day for food, markets, history and shopping

By now, you’re hopefully starting to feel relaxed. To unwind even more, we suggest a slow start to the morning with a long, leisurely breakfast at the chapel — perhaps with croissants or pastries picked up from Ludlow Farm Shop. Afterwards, take the short drive into Ludlow to explore this delightful historic town. Ludlow is full of independent shops, cafés, delis and bakeries, offering something for everyone. If history is of interest, you might like to visit Ludlow Museum or explore the nearby church. And, of course, the highlight of the town is its famous castle, set right in the centre. Ludlow is also well known for its market, held in the historic square every Saturday. Here you’ll find stalls selling local produce, handcrafted gifts and much more. For some gentle exercise, head down to the river for a walk along the well-known Bread Walk. This is an ideal day to enjoy a meal out — perhaps a relaxed lunch in one of Ludlow’s cafés or dinner in one of its acclaimed restaurants. (You can find our recommendations on places to eat on our website.)

Sunday – a day for walking and exploring the Shropshire Hills

Make the most of today by heading out for a longer walk. For keen walkers, this is the perfect opportunity to explore the Long Mynd or the Stiperstones, especially if the weather is kind. Both offer rewarding climbs with magnificent views across the Shropshire Hills. We’ve shared more details in our blog posts on these walks (insert links here). If you prefer something gentler, Mortimer Forest near Ludlow is an excellent option. The forest offers a range of trails of varying lengths, many of which are relatively flat and good underfoot. Some routes are also suitable for wheelchair users, and there are cycle trails if you prefer to explore on two wheels. Afterwards, head back into Ludlow for coffee, cake or a late lunch at one of the many independent cafés before returning to the chapel for the evening. Light the fire, put something easy in the oven to cook and enjoy a slow, relaxed end to the day.

Monday – a slow departure

With a check-out time of 11 am, there’s no need to rush. Enjoy a slow breakfast and a final coffee before packing up. If you don’t need to head straight home, you could extend that holiday feeling with a visit to one of the nearby National Trust properties. Croft Castle, Berrington Hall, Dudmaston Estate and Attingham Park are all within easy driving distance. A gentle walk around the gardens followed by lunch in a café is a lovely way to round off your stay before heading home feeling rested and refreshed.

Whether you’re exploring the Shropshire Hills, wandering through Ludlow or simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings, a few days here can feel like a true reset.
